    The channel number field is strictly numeric, and it should be that way because it helps the program do things like know which channel number to add when the user creates a new channel between other channels.

    Therefore, it's not possible to convert it into a text field, but we're going to consider whether there's a simple way to do it without complicating the user interface.

    One way to do this with what the program already has is to leave the numeric field empty and enter the free text you need in the text field (here's a screenshot).

    And... this would be another, cleaner way to include details about the sends using custom columns:
